Topics in this short story include immigration, Mexican culture, background information about the character, and his frustration with republicans. The message of the story was to educate to the reader about the life of a Mexican immigrant who came here illegally but married an American citizen. The character strives towards obtaining his citizenship and shows so by explaining his effort put in to provide for his family. He explains to the reader how he has worked his way up to higher paying jobs just like his grandfather who came to america many years before he did. He talks about how he is unable to become a citizen because he had already got deported back to mexico once and was strictly told to not come back.
