Tierney on 622, Hanson on 624

Topics in this short story include immigration, Mexican culture, background information about the character, and his frustration with republicans. The message of the story was to educate to the reader about the life of a Mexican immigrant who came here illegally but married an American citizen. The character strives towards obtaining his citizenship and shows so by explaining his effort put in to provide for his family. He explains to the reader how he has worked his way up to higher paying jobs just like his grandfather who came to america many years before he did. He talks about how he is unable to become a citizen because he had already got deported back to mexico once and was strictly told to not come back. His anger and frustration with the republican side of the government is great because they always shoot down bills that democrats propose to help benefit people like him. He fears that one day he will be deported back to mexico and be separated from his daughter and wife. The purpose of this essay was to prove that not all illegal immigrants are bad people. The writer wants to show the reader that we are all alike and erase stereotypes towards Mexican immigrants. The writer was trying to communicate to audiences that can help him change what is going on.

The short story "Our Brave New World of Immigration" includes topics such as out of sight out of mind, fleeing the scene of a car accident, illegal workers, fake identification, cheap labor, and inexperienced drivers. The message of the story is to prove that the U.S. doesn't have strong enough laws that prevent undocumented workers. This short story was written to help bring attention of the dangers that come along with undocumented workers. This story is indented for people of america, voters, and democrats to read. The writer is very confident about his thoughts, he gives some examples like the car accident and how it caused a major traffic jam, costed the state thousands of dollars,  and how they have not only affected him but others to.

TED Talk Response

The broad topic of this ted talk is gossip and how it documents our history. The woman who is speaking to us is a professional gossiper and does it for a living. She proves to us that gossip dates back many years ago and it is who we are. The idea that is established is that our successors determine who we were based on our gossip history. She brought up the story of Chris Brown and Rhianna and how Chris beat her up badly. She then brought up the gossip about John Travolta and how he allegedly was having an affair with another man. The point she was trying to make is, who do we want to go down in history as? people who forgave a man for hitting a woman? or even go down in history as someone who forgave someone who would rather have an affair with a man rather than a woman? In the end we should be more careful about who we support, and what they have done in the past because it can tell a lot who we are as people.
